SLOTH

Bradypodidae or Megalonychidae (family)

LIVES Jungles of Central and South America

EATS Leaves, shoots, fruits

The sloth is officially the slowest animal in the world; in fact, it’s so slow that even algae grows on it, as if it were a tree. It sleeps up to 20 hours a day, hanging from branches with its incredible razor-sharp claws.

As the sloth is so docile, it has the appearance of being permanently happy and chilled out, with its upturned mouth and gleaming black eyes, and black rings around its eyes like a Zorro mask that just make you want to go, ’Ahhhh!’ To compensate for its lack of mobility, the sloth has a head that it can swivel around 270 degrees, thus further eliminating the need to move more than is absolutely necessary to survey its surroundings.

This lazy bones even mates and gives birth while hanging from trees, and its babies cling on to their mother for nine months before venturing off to a branch of their own. Surprisingly, sloths are competent swimmers as they have strong forearms enabling them to power through the water.
